Fit and Healthy

What do you do to stay fit or be a healthy individual? Share any useful tips and advice. Or tell us about your plans to get healthier.

Another one that’s going to be quite tricky, because I’m not particularly fit or healthy. That said, I do have a couple of things I can say.

I have never been markedly fit and healthy. Or, it has to be said, markedly unfit and/or unhealthy. Even when you could argue I was at my least healthy – when I weighed over 21 stone, I still did the Moonwalk. Twice.

That’s not to say I was perfectly healthy – I certainly wasn’t – but simple weight can be misleading. To start with I am 6’2″, so I am expected to be heavier than average. I also carry weight pretty well. Many people expressed surprise at how much I weighed, as I ‘didn’t look that big’. But even so, I was clearly overweight, and I wasn’t very happy with it – if for no other reason that it was a pain to buy clothes, and my mother was nagging me

Still, I was playing football once a week and never had any medical complaints. But I decided to do something about it, and in the end signed on with Weightwatchers. Not the full blown ‘go to meetings and talk about fat’ version, but just the online version which gives you access to the weight and point tracking tools, and the recipes.

I probably have an advantage here because I love cooking, so finding new recipes and trying them out, adapting recipes to lower calorie versions is all fun for me, so I actually enjoy the process of trying to lose weight.

So far, I have lost nearly 4 stone and to be honest I haven’t made a huge effort – mainly cutting down on calories and snacks. It hasn’t happened massively quickly, but that’s probably a good thing. I feel more comfortable about maintaining a lower weight if I get there gradually.

I play football twice a week, which definitely makes a difference, and I drink less than I used to – though probably still too much. I’m much happier with my weight now, but I still have more to lose, so we’ll see how it goes!
